Our Binky Baby loves a Big Bear.
I won't bore you with all of the alphabet days we do but this tied in well. I've never had a Binky baby before. It's getting to the point that Kevin and I want to throw it away but Jacob is so attached to it. We have weaned him down a little, he now keeps it in his bed and can have it for naps and bedtime. I still find him sneaking in there to get it though. It works as a nice plug during church so that's one reason I hesitate getting rid of it. Did or do you have a Binky baby? What did you do? When or how did you get rid of it?

We've had 2 binkie babies. With both of them we just started cliping the end of it. I started really small at first. They get irritated, but still use it. Eventually it gets so small that they can't keep it in their mouths. I've heard of one kid that they did that to and he/she got so mad they just threw it in the trash! You're doing great just having him keep it in his bed! It will come. Most likely he'll be too embarrassed to take it to prom. Everything is just a phase!
I had one binkie baby out of three, and I LOVED it. It bought me nine months of quiet church.
We started out like you, only allowing it in his crib. Eventually they all fell behind his crib and we left them there.
It took a couple of horrible days (crying, etc) and then it was over, and he forgot all about it.
Riley and Kaitlyn both really loved their binky. We tied the binky to their beds at two years and every week shorten the string. Eventually it was so uncomfortable to suck that they would give up. The final step was to cut the end. It only took one month. I love this method it really works, no crying or missing it.
That picture is pretty cute!
Bridget went through phases with her binkie. To finally get rid of it in the end, we started like you did limiting it to her bed. Sometimes she would choose to go lay in her bed, just so she could use it. After awhile she started using it less and less and forgetting about it. Eventually after a nap or two where she forgot to use it... it would disappear. We "searched" all over the house but never did find it. She only asked for about a week before she gave up. This was all just before her 2nd birthday.
But now she sucks her thumb instead. We've managed to limit that to her bed as well... but we can't exactly make her thumb disappear.
Good Luck!
I've had one binkie baby, I did a lot of research on it. Most dentists say that it's not a bad thing and in some cases it was good that the child sucked on the binkie for longer. I would have been better off if I would have sucked on a binkie. Anyhow also some children just need that sucking motion to get to sleep and they will/should grow out of it. I was at the same point you are, only have it at naps, chruch, and bed time. The binkie was loved so much I didn't have to even say it was nap time. After lunch Brin would get cleaned up and go straight to bed to take a nap. But one day Ben got sick of the binkie, not knowing the things that I had read and cut it up. She had a really hard time sleeping and now will not take naps unless really tired and falls asleep while eating or in the car. So DO NOT take the binkie away right now. It's not a bad thing and some even say that when they start school the child might see that it, the binkie, isn't a social norm and ween themselves of it.
I only had one of my three take a binki. I don't even remember how we took hers away because she's my oldest. I helped one of Michelle's girls get rid of her binki. She was over playing one day, sucking on her binki and I just told her that she didn't need it anymore and she could go throw it in the garbage. (I was very kind about it.) She took it right to the garbage and never asked for it again. I did sneak it out of the garbage though, just incase.
My old neighbor did something interesting. She talked to her boy about getting rid of it and that they were going to say goodbye to it in a couple of days. When the day came, she got some helium balloons, tied the binki to it and had her boy let it go. He knew then that it was for sure gone.
I've never had a binkie baby, but Josie sucks her thumb. I don't know how to get her to stop that either... sometimes she sucks on it so much it gets dry and cracks. It looks so sore! That is a good idea Kristi. I'll have to remember that one in case anyone else ever asks. :)
hmmm...Andrew never took a binki, but Simon does. I completely understand about wanting to keep using it just for the sake of peace and quiet! Our Dr. recommended that we get rid of it now, before he's a year old, but I think I'm more attached than he is.
Hannah was a total binkie baby. We had her down to bedtime only for quite a while, then when she turned two she got her "big girl bed." We told her that big girls' didn't need binkies in their big girl bed, and that took care of it! I couldn't believe it! It was nice to get rid of it then because she didn't associate going to sleep in that bed with having a binkie.
Hi Sander,
Niether of my kids have taken binks, but my friends kids sure did. The decided to have the "Binkie Fairy" come visit them so that she could take the binkies away to new babies that needed them. They tied the binkies into a tree out front with some colorful string and had their son help, then went to bed. In the morning the "Binkie Fairy" had come and taken the binkies away to new babies that "needed" them. My friends said it worked like a charm and will do this again with her next child since they have both loved their binks. I've heard of cutting the ends, but I don't know what would work. The balloon idea sounds like fun too. Good luck.
Halle still has a binky and I think she is just a little younger than Jacob. She turned one January 4. She absolutely only uses her binky at bedtime, naptime, and long road trips. She never asks for it any other time and goes right to sleep with no fits when she has it for bed time. She has good sleeping habits and I am not worried about getting rid of it yet. It is not hurting anything. I think she will just grow out of it. I like your friend's idea of tying it to the crib!
